Climate change affected social issues in Isiolo County, Kenya. The impacts of climate change such as water scarcity, food insecurity, and desertification exacerbated existing social issues and created new ones. For instance:

  • Climate change reduced crop yields and caused loss of livelihoods, which increased poverty and food insecurity. This also led to internal and cross-border migration in search of resources, causing conflict and social upheaval.
  • Climate change also increased the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, which displaced people and damaged infrastructure. This exacerbated housing and land tenure issues, leading to increased vulnerability and loss of property.
  • Climate change also caused changes in the distribution of disease vectors, leading to increased incidence of vector-borne diseases and health problems.
  • Climate change also caused water scarcity and competition for resources, which increased conflict and tension between different groups, particularly pastoralists and farmers.

Climate change did not only affect the environment but also had a far-reaching impact on social issues, and it was important to consider these impacts in order to address climate change in a way that was equitable and respected the rights of local communities.
